“We love because He first loved us.”
Part 2 of our Four‑Part Core Values Series
Every church carries values, but values only matter when they shape the way we live, love, and follow Jesus together. At Hope Church Holywell, we’ve identified four core commitments that express the kind of community we long to become: Honour Jesus. Offer His love generously. Pursue Spirit‑led community. Extend His grace.
In Part 1, we explored what it means to honour Jesus — to make Him the Hero of our story. Now, in Part 2, we turn to the natural overflow of that honour: offering His love generously.
When Jesus Is the Hero, Love Becomes Our Posture
In the sermon When Jesus Becomes the Hero of Our Story, we reflected on how Jesus re‑centres our lives. When He takes His rightful place at the centre, something profound happens: His love begins to reshape the way we see people, respond to need, and carry ourselves in the world. Generous love is not an optional extra for the Christian life. It is the evidence that Jesus is truly at work within us.
What Does It Mean to Offer His Love Generously?
This value is not about trying harder to be nice. It is about allowing the love of Christ to flow through us in ways that are sincere, sacrificial, and Spirit‑empowered.
1. Love that sees people the way Jesus sees them
Jesus never looked at crowds; He looked at individuals. He noticed the overlooked, welcomed the outsider, and dignified the broken. Offering His love generously begins with learning to see people through His eyes — with compassion rather than judgement, curiosity rather than assumption.
2. Love that moves toward need, not away from it
Jesus consistently stepped toward the hurting, the lonely, the confused and the ashamed. To offer His love generously is to resist the instinct to withdraw, protect, or self‑preserve. It is choosing to be present, even when it costs us time, comfort, or convenience.
3. Love expressed in practical, everyday ways
Generous love is rarely dramatic. It is often expressed in small, faithful acts: a listening ear, a warm welcome, a meal shared, a prayer offered, a message sent at the right moment. These simple acts become sacred when they are offered in His name.
4. Love that reflects the heart of Jesus, not our own capacity
Our own love runs out quickly. His does not. Offering His love generously means drawing from His strength, His patience, His compassion — not our own limited reserves. It is a supernatural love, sustained by the Spirit.
Why This Value Matters for Our Church
Holywell is full of people longing to be seen, known, and valued. A church that offers the love of Jesus generously becomes a place of refuge, healing, and belonging. It becomes a community where people encounter Christ not only through sermons and songs, but through the warmth and welcome of His people.
This value also keeps us outward‑facing. It reminds us that the church does not exist for itself. We are called to carry the love of Jesus into our homes, workplaces, schools, and streets — wherever He has placed us.
A Community Formed by Generous Love
Imagine a church where love is not rationed but poured out freely. Where newcomers feel at home before they hear a sermon. Where burdens are shared, not hidden. Where kindness is normal, not exceptional. Where the love of Jesus is not only spoken about but experienced.
This is the kind of community we are becoming — slowly, humbly, intentionally.
Looking Ahead
In the next two blogs, we will explore the remaining core values that shape Hope Church Holywell:
Pursuing Spirit‑led community
Extending His grace
Each value is a response to Jesus — the One we honour, the One we follow, the One whose love we are learning to offer generously.
“Father, thank You for loving us first. Your love is patient, kind, and unending. Fill our hearts with that same love so we may offer it freely to others. Help us to see people as You see them, to move toward need with compassion, and to serve with humility. Where our love runs thin, strengthen us by Your Spirit. Make us a community where Your love is experienced in real and tangible ways. Let Your generous love flow through us into Holywell and beyond. Amen.”
