He Meets Us on the Way

“As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus Himself came up and walked along with them.” — Luke 24:15
As we reflect on Easter, I am reminded about the very first Easter. It wasn’t soft or sentimental. It was a weekend of shock, grief, silence, and waiting. The disciples endured the weight of shattered expectations, the ache of unanswered prayers, and the fear that the story had ended too soon. That was the experience of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. They weren’t looking for a miracle. They weren’t expecting hope. They were simply walking - carrying confusion, disappointment, and unanswered questions. And it’s there, in the ordinary rhythm of their journey, that Jesus quietly drew near.
He didn’t wait for them to “get it together.”
He didn’t demand they pretend everything was fine.
He simply joined them on the road they were already walking.
Many of us know what it feels like to walk with heavy hearts. We carry the weight of things we didn’t choose, didn’t expect, or don’t yet understand. But the risen Jesus still does what He did then - He meets us on the way. Not once we’ve arrived. Not once we’ve sorted everything out. But right in the middle of real life.
And as He walks with us, He gently opens our eyes to see Him again - the ne who is alive, present, faithful, and full of grace.
Today, may you sense the quiet nearness of Jesus. May your heart burn again with hope. And may you discover that He has been walking beside you all along.
Prayer
Risen Lord Jesus,
We come to You as those who know what it feels like to wait in the dark.
You understand the weight of that first Easter—
the grief of Friday,
the silence of Saturday,
and the wonder of Sunday morning.
Thank You that You are the God who works even when we cannot see it.
Thank You that resurrection hope was already moving
long before the disciples realised it.
And thank You that the same is true for us today.
For every place in our lives that feels like a long, unfinished Saturday,
breathe Your life again.
For every heart carrying disappointment or confusion,
speak Your peace.
For every weary soul that has endured a long season,
let Your risen presence draw near.
Open our eyes to recognise You on the road we’re walking.
Open our hearts to receive Your hope.
And open our lives to the new beginnings You are already preparing.
Jesus, You are alive.
And because You live,
we dare to hope again.
Amen.
